Here we are – Sam and Susan Sharp, and our dog, Moon. Together, the three of us own and caretake Open Sky Organic Farm. We purchased a 10 acre fallow hay field outside of Cross Village, Michigan in 2015. It came with two cool old barns, a rundown modular home and piles of debris. We ditched the modular and built a small home, added three hoop houses, two caterpillar tunnels, a chicken coop with 16 chickens, two barn cats, a sauna and a coupe of outbuildings-one for each of us. We fenced in 4 acres and currently have about two acres in production; we make an effort to landscape the rest with native and pollinator-friendly plants.
I was thinking:
so this is how you swim inward,
so this is how you flow outward,
so this is how you pray.
Our Mission: It is our goal to provide our local communities with the highest quality produce.
We decided a while back that small scale farming is one of the best ways to affect social and environmental change. Open Sky Farm grew out of that desire. We are a small, certified organic farm specializing in a wide variety of vegetables, cut and potted herbs, and almost 100 varieties of cut flowers. Your decision to buy organic helps preserve our land and water in beautiful northern Michigan! Let us feed your body and soul!
Our approach is holistic: we believe that the best quality produce is the result of the best soil. We work hard to build our soil in a natural way, through the use of cover crops, crop rotation, compost, leaf litter and natural fertilizers such as greensand, rock phosphate and fish emulsion. We do not use pesticides or herbicides, as we believe you are what you eat!
