Our Story

Nestled near the shores of Lake Michigan in Cross Village Michigan, the seeds for our farm were planted long ago. Our 3 acre Open Sky Farm boasts both classic blooms like peonies and dahlias, as well as more unusual stems such as eremurus and knifphofia. Our five hoop houses allow us to grow fresh flowers 11 months out of the year.

We constantly strive to bring the best blooms to Northern Michigan whether it be at the Harbor Springs Farmers Market, local grocers, or creating beauty for weddings. Our passion for the seasonal flower movement fuels the fire behind our farm.

With a passion for growing since childhood, Susan earned a degree in biology and chemistry. She spent her summer after graduating picking apples on an orchard in Washington State which piqued her interest in someday starting a farm. Her background in science was the perfect fit for learning the ins and outs of farming and allowed her to hone her growing skills as a farmer.

After teaching 8th grade science for 30 years, Susan finally retired and started Open Sky Organic Farm. What started as a small hoop house operation, eventually turned into a booming four season farm.

Susan’s daughter, Katie grew up spending the majority of her childhood outside where she was often found coloring in the garden her mom grew for her. She combined her passion for the great outdoors and art by earning a degree in outdoor education while simultaneously taking art classes.

Katie spent the majority of her 20’s traveling the world and working as a whitewater raft guide in Chile. Her travels sparked her curiosity in natural design and beauty. Once finally returning home to northern Michigan, she honed her skills in floral design and started working alongside her mom on the farm.

Fast forward to today, we have combined our skills to grow Open Sky together. Each offering unique talents, our skill sets has allowed us to become one of the leading flower farms in Michigan.

We combine a passion for science, experimentation, natural beauty, and unique designs into every stem we grow and every arrangement we create.
